Black Dog Scotch Whisky was founded in 1883 in Scotland, where it was first blended by James MacKinlay, who was a second-generation blender from the Leith-based family. He crafted this whisky on order for Herbert Musgave Phipson, owner of Phipson and Co. Wine Merchants from Bombay (Mumbai). The brand was called Millard Black Dog, named after Walter Samuel Millard, a 19-year-old British employee of Phipson – who called it ‘Black Dog’ after his favorite salmon fishing fly with the same name.
McDowell & Co (now called as USL) and United Distillers created India's first joint venture in the alcoholic beverages industry, forming United Distillers India Limited in 1992, It began bottling operations in Nashik to produce Black Dog for the Indian market.
