Fitou is a wine from the south of France. It is among the best wines of the South and takes its name from the Aude village of Fitou.Fitou was the first red wine in Languedoc-Roussillon to obtain the status of Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée in 1948.
The appellation covers a production area of 2,500 ha of vines, a production of 100,000 hl (13.3 million bottles) of wine on average with an average yield of 40 hl per hectare, the lowest yield of all AOCs. of Languedoc.
The word Fitou reflects in itself all the exceptional character of the appellation, because it finds its origin in the Latin fita which means border or limit. In fact, only nine villages have the right to produce Fitou. The villages of Fitou, Caves, Treilles, La Palme and Leucate on the Mediterranean coast, and Paziols, Tuchan, Villeneuve and Cascastel a few kilometers further on in the Corbières massif.
The Fitou is mainly composed of a blend of Carignan and Grenache, balanced with Syrah for the upper part of Fitou and Mourvèdre for the Fitou from the seaside.
The prestigious Château de Montmal vineyard is located in the heart of the schist hills of the village of Fitou. Not heard of Fitou? No worries. It’s a little town in the southwest corner of France making wines very much like Cotes du Rhone or Gigondas or even the famed region Chateauneuf du Pape… but not at such high prices as the best wines of those regions. Château de Montmal is renowned for making affordable wines that ‘over-deliver’ and stand favorably when compared to a typical Rhone blend or Chateauneuf du Pape yet at a fraction of the price.

Château de Montmal Fitou
This wine is a steal! It’s 38% Syrah, 38% Grenache and 24% Carignan, aged in new barrels for 12 months to give it a big, rich weight on the palate, and shows that similar spice and garrigue characteristics of Rhône Grenache balanced by the chewy, dense Syrah and Carignan fruit. Yes, it’s a mouthful. Need a big, full-bodied, deliciousness to accompany your shelf-in-place grilling? This is the wine for that!
This wine goes well with red meat, roast lamb, game or strong cheeses.
